I have had an above average number of thoughts this week, and have spent a large amount of time discussing them with my favorite people. I will spare you most of the lengthy details, but there is one thing I would like to share. I have always been very nostalgic. I love to think about the past and relive good memories. I find myself saying things like "Remember when...." and "Those were the days..." quite often, as I'm sure we all do. I never realized that this could be a little dangerous. I was reading a book and chapter was talking about scarcity and how we compare lives to "media-driven visions of perfection" and hold our reality against our "own fictional account of how great someone else has it". Then the author talked specifically about nostalgia in a way I had never considered before. It hit me hard. I believe it is so true and something I need to remember when I'm enjoying my trips down memory lane.
"Nostalgia is also a dangerous form of comparison. Think about how often we compare ourselves and our lives to a memory that nostalgia has so completely edited that is never really existed."
